The REDES Project

A National Girls' Empowerment Network Created by PCVs in Mozambique

Conferences September 17, 2010

Every year REDES holds conferences to provide a venue for young women to come together for a period of time to learn, share, and prepare themselves to return to their communities as leaders. These conferences are organized and implemented by Peace Corps volunteers and Mozambican facilitators and are funded by the United States Embassy’s Public Affairs Office.

The conference curricula cover topics of importance for women living in Mozambique today: sexual health and reproduction, prevention of STDs and HIV and AIDS, women’s rights, and professional and educational opportunities. While discussing these pivotal issues, the girls are building skills they can use to improve their personal and professional lives. The conferences also serve as a training ground for participants and Mozambican facilitators who will return to their communities with the capacity to develop local projects, thus spreading the positive impact of the conference.
